The great starting debacle pt 9

Cock. I think the Beast is dead. Thursday last, my old school mate Ben came round to try is hand at beast repair. Ben is a mechanic. Ben has been a mechanic for 20 years. Ben has got a big van with lots of big tools in it.

He tried the following: set the distributor via me turning the back wheel; tested electric currents in various wires; took out spark plus and sniffed them; tested sparks; sprayed fuel directly into the plug holes; sprayed fuel directly into the carbs; undid fuel pipes to check that fuel was being pumped; checked sparks; removed the rocker covers.

Cock. He was there for 2½ hours. He left with my SD1 manual, confused and a little miffed ... his professional pride dented by the Beast! I think it is terminal. Don't think that selling the V70 would be a good idea!

  1. Summer is approaching mate! Are you still getting the thing started, but then it wont run when the ignition is not turned to the cranking poistion? Saw my dad this weekend and he reminded me of a similar issue with my Spitfire, where a thing called the ballast resistor was broken. What this did was to boost the spark plug voltage for cranking (to 12V), then drop it back to normal when idling or running. Problem was that the latter bit didnt work, so you could crank the engine and it would catch, throw out the starter and then die. My dad diagnosed this by short circuiting the ballast resistor. Maybe worth a look if you have not already tried!

  2. Hi Fil. Feel free to come and play with this one whenever you want!

I thought that was the case and managed to acquire another ballast resistor from some blokes shed. Alas, she is still dead. Unless I have 2 buggered ballast resistors which I suppose is a possibility, the problem lays elsewhere. I have sparks but it will not catch at all now.

Ben has a few more ideas, which is great as I have none. I have also very little interest left either. This is not the driving experience that I was after!

  3. My dad would probably be able to do what he did to my Spitfire again! Guess its possible to have two broken ballast resistors but does seem unlikely. I will get him to do that next time we are in Kiddy but that could be a while away so maybe get Ben to short circuit it to see if it makes any difference? Good luck mate, thinking of you coz I know how frustrating it must be. Then again, thats the thing about realising your dreams....they are always a bit shit in reality I suspect! I will remember that next time I am perusing the camper vans on EBay.

  4. "...realising your dreams....they are always a bit shit in reality...". Never a truer word said! Teaching wasn't very nice and neither is TR8 ownership! I think you should buy a campervan ... I will then be able to make comments on your blog!!
